Processing the stalk material of the cannabis species is one tough job. Techniques used for centuries involve field retting (rotting) where the stalks are cut and lie in the fields to allow the plant gum (lignum) to decompose. Another technique is to soak the stalks in pools of water to accomplish the same thing. This also serves to dissolve the woody core material at the same time.

Hemp Composites, Plastics and More
Composites made from hemp fibre and binding agents (hemp plastics etc.) create strong, lightweight materials and is growing. The most rapidly expanding application for hemp fiber is as a reinforcement in composites. The blending materials range from thermoplastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene to thermoset fiber such as polyester.
Hemp seed oil can be used to produce biofuel through the process of transesterification, an organic chemistry process that exchanges the organic group R″ of an ester with the organic group R′ of an alcohol. The transesterification process is also used to convert fats (triglycerides) into biodiesel.

When this article was first written - CO2 levels were at 401ppm. Today - 410ppm as per NASA readings.
