Processing Systems

Processing the stalk material of the cannabis species is one tough job.  Techniques used for centuries involve field retting (rotting) where the stalks are cut and lie in the fields to allow the plant gum (lignum) to decompose.  Another technique is to soak the stalks in pools of water to accomplish the same thing.  This also serves to dissolve the woody core material at the same time.

Harvesting Equipment

Canada and the US grew more hemp last year: acreage was up. The US Farm Bill passed making hemp legal across North America. This will help expand the entire sector and encourage development from the farm to the factory.

Hemp Cultivars 2020

As referenced in the definition of an “approved cultivar” in subsection 1(1) of the Industrial Hemp Regulations, the List of Approved Cultivars sets out the following industrial hemp varieties for commercial cultivation under license for the year

2020. The list may contain variety names that are synonyms for the same variety.

Hemp farming is very similar to other broad acre crops.  Fields that grow corn or Canola can grow hemp. Most of the techniques and just plain ol' good farming practices apply to growing hemp.  The better your fields, the better your yields.

Hemp Composites, Plastics and More

Composites made from hemp fibre and binding agents (hemp plastics etc.) create strong, lightweight materials and is growing.  The most rapidly expanding application for hemp fiber is as a reinforcement in composites. The blending materials range from thermoplastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene to thermoset fiber such as polyester.

Bio-Fuels

Hemp seed oil can be used to produce biofuel through the process of transesterification, an organic chemistry process that exchanges the organic group R″ of an ester with the organic group R′ of an alcohol. The transesterification process is also used to convert fats (triglycerides) into biodiesel.
