Processing the stalk material of the cannabis species is one tough job. Techniques used for centuries involve field retting (rotting) where the stalks are cut and lie in the fields to allow the plant gum (lignum) to decompose. Another technique is to soak the stalks in pools of water to accomplish the same thing. This also serves to dissolve the woody core material at the same time.
Sustainable housing and building today goes far beyond the current systems and traditional products used. There are a wealth of applications and products from the industrial cannabis innovations. I am going to cover a few home building products being manufactured and used today.
A few years ago, a friend of mine from Perdue University called me up with a question. “You’re from Canada, can you find hemp fibre for a company here in Illinois?” “Sure”, I said, “That shouldn’t be a problem. Do you have the specifications?” He sent them to over me.
Hemp Carbon Innovations
Amazing as that sounds, it's true. A hemp carbon foam structure can store an electrical charge. Carl Martel put together this hemp battery unit and demonstrated it at the CHTA show. Charging peoples cell phones... the crowd went wild.
Canada and the US grew more hemp last year: acreage was up. The US Farm Bill passed making hemp legal across North America. This will help expand the entire sector and encourage development from the farm to the factory.
New technology and systems are coming on-stream this year.
Hemp Cultivars 2020
As referenced in the definition of an “approved cultivar” in subsection 1(1) of the Industrial Hemp Regulations, the List of Approved Cultivars sets out the following industrial hemp varieties for commercial cultivation under license for the year
2020. The list may contain variety names that are synonyms for the same variety.
Hemp Growing Guide
Hemp farming is very similar to other broad acre crops. Fields that grow corn or Canola can grow hemp. Most of the techniques and just plain ol' good farming practices apply to growing hemp. The better your fields, the better your yields.
CannaSystems has assembled a list of industrial sectors that can use the products made from the fibre or core hurd. These include Fibre and Core categories for Household items , Paper products, Technical textile, Construction materials, Bio-composites and more. Companies across a wide range of industries are potential candidates for industrial hemp applications.
New Hemp Equipment
Hemp harvesting in Lithuania has continued for generations using traditional methods. Now new equipment is being built to increase the throughput and improve handling of hemp crops. Their line of farm machinery enables hemp farmers to handle a wide range of crop conditions. Laumetris has developed a 4-level cutter for tall hemp crops.
Industrial Hemp Legalization
Over the course of this year, we have heard from every Province and nearly every State with a hemp program in the works. (We are the dot with the white outline in southern Ontario.) Now that the state of Texas has joined the fray, the majority of the U.S. is now "legal", where low THC strains (.3%) can be grown as a farm crop
North Report - Prohibition Ends
In this week's episode, Bruce Ryan (Founder & CEO of CannaSystems) explores all things Hemp and Cannabis related. They specialize in processing machinery for the industrial Hemp sector. The machinery CannaSystems focuses on is heading directly to farms where the stock material can be turned into fibre and core for industrial manufacturing.
The country’s premiere cannabis business conference & expo, O’Cannabiz is a gathering of the complete Canadian and International industry conducting high level networking under one roof.
Green Building Revolution
CannaSystems works in partnership with and promotes a wide variety of companies in Canada and the US that are front and center in the industrial hemp industry. One of the outstanding products that has been developed using hemp is Just BioFiber’s SSR Block construction system.
Peter Diamandis has a radical idea. The coming age will be one of abundance--not for the few, but for the many, the bottom three billion people on earth. Bio-composites and fuel from renewable cannabis are transforming the transportation sector. As most people know, vehicles of all sorts have a negative impact on the environment.
Cannabis Can Create a Global Circular Economy!
Circular Economy Definition: A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.
Cannabis - The Ancient Herb
Hemp is one of the oldest domesticated crops known to man. It has been used for medicine, spirituality, paper, textiles, construction, housing and cordage for thousands of years. In fact, the Columbia History of the World states that the oldest relic of human industry is a scrap of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC.
The Green rEvolution
According to ProCon.org, as of October 2018, 38 states have legalized some form of medical marijuana: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey.
Hemp Composites, Plastics and More
Composites made from hemp fibre and binding agents (hemp plastics etc.) create strong, lightweight materials and is growing. The most rapidly expanding application for hemp fiber is as a reinforcement in composites. The blending materials range from thermoplastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene to thermoset fiber such as polyester.
Hemp seed oil can be used to produce biofuel through the process of transesterification, an organic chemistry process that exchanges the organic group R″ of an ester with the organic group R′ of an alcohol. The transesterification process is also used to convert fats (triglycerides) into biodiesel.
Renewable energy technology
Renewable energy is any naturally occurring, theoretically inexhaustible source of energy, such as biomass, solar, wind, tidal, wave, and hydroelectric power. Energy that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel. Technological and scientific advances today make the eradication of human dependency on fossil fuels a coming reality rather than a theory.
We've covered the problem of climate change in other articles but we need to address an aspect of the damage CO2 is doing to the world's oceans so that a fuller picture emerges as to the scope of the greenhouse gas problem -- and the solutions cannabis offers. This article started with some statements from someone who wanted to argue about climate change.
This article started while researching a completely different subject. A headline caught our attention and one thing led to another; what we found wasn’t surprising but is indeed something to think about – and something to watch in the future. On 10/10/2017 we read an EPA press headline:
Using petroleum and coal fuel sources has enabled our global civilization but has come at a terrible cost...global climate change that threatens our very survival. A carbon footprint is defined as the total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
A New Future
Peter Diamandis has a radical idea. The coming age will be one of abundance--not for the few, but for the many, the bottom three billion people on earth. He focuses on the disruptive technologies rolling across our planet. The ancient practices of limitations and scarcity-thinking are giving way to a ‘circular economy’ paradigm that is transforming many segments of human civilization.
As global temperatures continue to rise, droughts are expected to become more frequent and severe in many regions during this century. A new study with NASA participation finds that land ecosystems took progressively longer to recover from droughts in the 20th century, and incomplete drought recovery may become the new normal in some areas,
People everywhere are talking about reducing CO2 emissions but the current discussions often fail to address the issue of ever-rising levels. Sequestering carbon dioxide through phytoremediation is the only real solution and our Vision is to capture 420 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year.
409 PPM CO2
When this article was first written - CO2 levels were at 401ppm. Today - 410ppm as per NASA readings. We’ve all heard about it for years; climate change, greenhouse gases, rising CO2 levels and melting polar ice caps. All most people basically know is that it’s a problem and we need to stop it…somehow.
This number comes from the acreage required to absorb massive amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. We estimate that 400plus gigatons of CO2 need to be removed from our air each and every year. It's a small area about the size of Texas..... globally this is a small spec of land.
This trend must be curbed and reduced to avoid disruption of our coastlines, our food supply and our global civilization. Our solution is simple: agricultural phytoremediation. CannaSystems supports the work of 350.org. Because we couldn't say it any better ourselves the following is ALL from the 350.org website!
Modern machine technology designed for the industrial hemp sector is sorely needed in the market. Since hemp (cannabis) became outlawed, the entire hemp industry missed the industrial revolution. As farm technology, materials technology and manufacturing technology advanced rapidly, industrial cannabis was largely ignored.
Patents & Designs
Over the years a number of patents for processing industrial hemp have been designed. The earliest we've found was 1740 with a wide array of variations and designs since then. Given the state of the industry, one might conclude that the hemp sector has missed the industrial revolution.
Farm Bill 2018
After decades of prohibition, the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill finally heralds the end of federal hemp prohibition. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, commonly referred to as the Farm Bil
